That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world; Holding forth the word of life...
Philippians 2:15-16a

The Comment

Someone left a comment on my last post.  I debated about posting it or just deleting it, but I decided to post it.  The next question is whether or not I should answer some of the accusations made in it.  You can read it for yourself, but I clearly never said many of the things the poster alleges.  As for the part about John 17, I really prayed over that.  I always try to be careful that I do not take Scripture out of context, but it can happen.  I don't believe the fact that I used this verse to support Jesus being God is completely taking it out of context.  However, the other interpretation that I'm accused of making (the disciples were God too), is just blatant heresy.  People do not become and are not God.  This is the danger of reading just one verse in isolation from the other verses around it and from the rest of the Bible.  For further study I would suggest reading John 1:1, 14; Romans 8:28-29; 12:2; Ephesians 5:1, 8-10; Philippians 2:5-8.

I do have an answer ready for the other accusations that were made in that comment.  I wrote it all out with many Scripture verses. The Bible tells us to "be ready always to give an answer" (I Peter 3:15).  I hesitate because I have no idea who this person is who posted the comment.  I have no idea their religious background, what Bible version they use, and how they define certain terms.  When I reason with someone I will only reason out of the Scripture, but if they are using a different Scripture then it complicates things greatly.  Different Bibles say different things, and therefore, what one Bible supports may not be in a different version.  Also, many religious groups and denominations use the same words but with different meanings.  Baptism in some groups is a means of salvation, and in others it is merely a symbol of salvation.  Without knowing how this person defines such terms, giving an appropriate answer is difficult.

One negative comment on my blog is not going to stop me from posting things from the Bible.  Nor will it stop me from saying what I believe and why.  I trust the person who posted this comment will continue to read my blog, and maybe they will come to see that in no way do I believe in a God who tortures or condemns people.  The fact is many people run into problems with the Bible because they only dwell on one aspect of it, or on a few select statements.  The Bible must be viewed as a whole.  Scripture must be compared with Scripture.  Sadly, those who have never accepted Christ as their Saviour will not understand the Scriptures.

I Corinthians 2:12-16
"Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? but we have the mind of Christ."

I quote again II Timothy 2:15 "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
